The supposed general principle of moderation, of course, is illogical on its face. Are we to practice moderation only in moderation, or are we to carry it to an extreme? In either case, we violate the so-called "principle" some of the time. Should we or should we not go to extremes to avoid extremism? In either case, we seem to become "extremists."

In practice, the supposed "principle" of moderation is observed by using subjective feelings as one's guide. The appropriate "middle course" is determined by emotions or "intuition." Unfortunately, as we shall see later, the subjectivist usually has little insight into the sources of his (or her) feelings, treating them as unfathomable primaries, divorced from his consciousness and from objective facts of reality.     Next page
