Crusoe's value scale, of course, changes constantly over time as conditions change and also as his knowledge and chosen purposes change. Furthermore, he never attains complete fulfillment. As human beings satisfy their most urgent goals, they formulate new goals and then act to achieve them. If Crusoe could somehow reach the "top" of his value scale, he would no longer be motivated to purposeful action. He would revert to a vegetative state, leading to his premature death. |
