In a peaceful society, the fact that Friday may have sold his berries in the past in no way obligates him to sell them again in the future. If no long-term contract is present, then he may choose to sell them to another buyer instead, or ask a higher price, or not sell at all.

The same principle, of course, will apply to larger-scale free markets. For instance, in a free-market society workers may choose to withhold their services from a particular employer. Provided that the workers have met any contractual obligations and that no force is wielded against the employer or third parties, such labor strikes fall fully within the domain of "peaceful action." Indeed, to require involuntary labor in such circumstances would clearly violate the free market. For the same reason, consumers in a free market may engage in boycotts, and advertisers may refuse to do business with particular publishers.      Next page
