A similar kind of collectivist thinking is exemplified by the academic fad of "multiculturalism," which should be differentiated from a more rational cosmopolitanism that values the positive objective contributions of many cultures (see table below). Like other racists, multiculturalists view human beings as collective groups; however, multiculturalists go a step further, claiming that all judgments and values are culturally relative. Cosmopolitanism The New "Multiculturalism"
Embraces objectivity and reason. Embraces subjectivism.
Selects and celebrates the best from each culture. Admits no general standard for "best." Members of one culture must not judge another; slavery, human sacrifice, sexual mutilation, etc. are justified if "appropriate" to a culture. There are no objective values, and by implication humans have no specific nature apart from their culture.
Seeks exposure to different cultures (voluntary integration). Seeks to keep cultures separate and "pure" (segregation).
