- Once all such steps have been taken and their effects have been fully integrated into all levels of one's mind, including the subconscious, guilt feelings should disappear. One remaining impediment may be a philosophical misconception: namely, that one ought to feel guilt for one's errors to the end of one's life. From the viewpoint of rational egoism, such residual guilt serves no productive purpose; on the contrary, it negatively impacts both pride and self-esteem, thus undermining the individual's rational self-interest. The belief that a person is obligated to perpetual guilt is therefore contrary to rational ethical principles and must be rejected.
