Increased understanding of individualist ideas and the widespread acceptance and practice of the above-named virtues both generate growing support for the principles of freedom. People who believe in their own reason, who think independently, who follow their principles to their logical conclusions, who strive to deal with their fellow human beings honestly and justly, who are willing to act to realize their values, and who aspire to the highest within themselves—these people must love liberty intensely and will take whatever action is necessary to preserve it. As they come to value their freedom more earnestly, they become more vigilant against possible encroachments upon that freedom by the government or by any who might seek special privileges through the state. At the same time, they experience a natural moral loyalty toward that government in its proper function, viz., upholding individual rights and freedom. These attitudes serve to insure that the government remains dedicated to that proper function.

Note the powerful positive-feedback loop generated by the liberal government, the free market it protects, the virtues promoted by that free market, and the consequent popular support for the principle of freedom—a loop which effectively strengthens these institutions, behaviors, and attitudes.      Next page
